Brief Description:

This project is looking at the population dynamics and migrations of the European eel within the Foyle catchment Northern Ireland. In the past 30 years we have witnessed an unprecedented decline in eel populations across Europe, however the reasons behind this decline are largely unknown. My project aims to look in detail at inland populations, where the species main growth phase takes place (pre spawning), investigating what factors influence the dynamics of such populations. I will also be looking at eel movement in particular within lake systems and the migrations which take place when the eel's leave our inland waterways at the beginning of their spawning migration. Evidence gained from this project will be used to set meaningful targets and highlight appropriate management options to aid in achieving EU targets for sustainable eel stocks.
